
Why you should ditch the old bathroom heat lamps for waterproof infrared
Let’s be honest: those old-school halogen heat lamps in the bathroom are kind of a nightmare. You know the ones—they look like big lightbulbs that get searing hot. They just aren’t built for the kind of steam and humidity a real bathroom creates. Here is the problem. Those bulbs are basically magnets for moisture. Steam settles on the glass, the heat kicks in instantly, and that sudden temperature jump causes the quartz to crack. Once that happens, the filament dies. Most of the time, you’re looking at a dead unit in about six months. It’s a cycle of replacing bulbs that just doesn’t need to happen. That’s why we’ve been moving toward waterproof infrared heaters. These aren’t just “covered” lamps. They’re built from the inside out to keep water away from the electronics. We’re talking gasketed housings and special coatings on the internal parts so the steam can’t get in to chew through the wiring. And the best part? The heat. Most heaters try to warm up the air. You’ll want a dedicated circuit to keep things safe. Also, they’re a bit chunkier. To get that waterproof seal right, the housing has to be a little larger than a slim bulb. You lose a tiny bit of ceiling space, but honestly? I’d take a slightly bulkier fixture over the headache of replacing burnt-out bulbs every single winter.
