How the Sealed System Actually Works
We don’t just toss a lamp into a tube and call it a day. Our IR heaters use a dual-wall setup. Think of it as a protective cocoon. The heating element lives inside a primary quartz envelope, which is then tucked inside a second, chemically resistant outer shell. Then, we pull a vacuum between those two layers. This does two things. First, it keeps the outer shell from getting too hot to touch. Second, it makes sure the heating element never, ever touches those volatile chemicals. Even if the inner lamp burns out or cracks, that outer seal is still there, keeping explosive vapors far away from the electrical terminals. The heat just radiates through. It’s clean. It’s safe.
The Nitty-Gritty: Wiring and Stability
You can’t just use off-the-shelf connectors here. They’d fail in a heartbeat. Instead, we use reinforced feed-throughs and hermetic seals at every electrical entry point. This stops chemical vapors from creeping back into your power supply. We also spend a lot of time matching the materials. Quartz and sealants expand at different rates when they get hot. If you get that wrong, the seal pops the moment the lamp hits peak temperature. We’ve dialed in the materials so everything expands together, keeping the whole unit stable.
The Trade-off
Here’s the catch. Because we’ve added that extra layer of protection between the filament and your workpiece, you lose a tiny bit of raw heat. It’s not a dealbreaker, but you’ll want to spec out a power supply with a slightly higher wattage to make up for that loss. When you consider the peace of mind you get knowing your lab isn’t a ticking time bomb, it’s a trade I’d make every single time.
