Here is a quick tip: don’t just buy the most powerful infrared lamp you can find. It sounds like a good plan, but it usually backfires. The trick is to match the heat to the actual size of your room and how high your ceilings are. Otherwise, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill or dealing with annoying cold spots.
Let’s talk about the space
Infrared is different because it heats you and your things, not the air around you. If you’ve got a tiny powder room—you know, those small 3-5 square meter spaces—a 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. If you try to cram a 1200W unit in there, it’ll get sweltering in seconds. You’ll find yourself constantly clicking the power on and off, which is a great way to burn out the relay and kill your lamp way sooner than it should. For those big master bathrooms (around 10-15 square meters), you’ve got to be more strategic. You can go with one heavy hitter—something in the 1200W to 1500W range—but it really depends on where you’re standing. Often, it’s better to use a couple of 600W units spread out. And a heads-up: if your ceilings are higher than 2.5 meters, you’re fighting a losing battle with distance. You’ll need a higher wattage just to make sure the warmth actually makes it down to your toes.
Power vs. Comfort
It’s all about a balance. In a small room, low wattage gets the job done quickly without sucking too much power. In a big room, you need that extra punch just to penetrate the space. But be careful. High-wattage lamps getintense. If you put a 1500W lamp in a tight, cheap plastic housing, it can actually warp the plastic. Plus, make sure your wiring is up to the task. You don’t want your wires struggling to keep up with the current.
The “Hot Spot” Problem
The faster the heat hits, the easier it is to create “hot spots.” It’s a weird feeling where your shoulders feel scorched, but your ankles are still freezing. To fix this, I suggest using a dimmer or a PWM controller. It lets you buy a powerful lamp for those brutal winter mornings, but dial it back when the weather mellows out.
