
Getting Your Bathroom Heating Just Right
When you’re picking out infrared lamps for the bathroom, it’s tempting to just go for the biggest number on the box. But that’s usually a mistake. It’s more about finding that sweet spot where the room feels cozy without wasting a ton of electricity or leaving you with weird cold patches.
Figuring out how much power you actually need
Think about the size of your space and how high your ceilings are. If you’ve got a tiny bathroom—something under 5m²—a 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty. In those cramped spaces, if you go too high, the room turns into a sauna way too fast, and you might even trip the safety sensors. For the bigger bathrooms, maybe 6m² to 12m², you’ll want to look at 600W to 1000W units. Here’s the thing: infrared doesn’t heat the air; it heats you. If the wattage is too low for the room, the heat just vanishes before it ever reaches you. But go too high, and you’re just throwing money away on your power bill without actually feeling any more comfortable.
The trade-off: Heat vs. Safety
You have to balance how “intense” the heat is with where you’re putting the lamp. A 1000W lamp is great because it feels like stepping into sunlight immediately. But it creates a very concentrated hot zone. If you go this route, mount the fixture higher up. You don’t want to accidentally singe your skin. Lower wattage lamps are a bit gentler and more spread out, so they work better if your ceilings are low. If you have a larger layout, don’t just buy one massive heater. I’d suggest wiring up a few smaller lamps in different zones. That way, you can just turn on the heat exactly where you’re standing.
A quick heads-up on installation
Before you start drilling, check your wiring. A single 400W lamp is usually a simple swap that any circuit can handle. But if you’re installing a bank of 1000W heaters, you really need to check your breaker capacity. There’s nothing more annoying than flipping the switch for a warm shower only to have the power snap off the second the heaters kick in.
